Bizen ware (pottery) from Okayama, Japan

Bizen ware is a kind of pottery from Okayama Prefecture, Japan and is one of the six ancient kilns of Japan.

The characteristic of Bizen ware is its unique manufacturing method that does not use any glaze. As it has no glaze, each pottery comes out differently and you have one and only pottery. Its rustic and simple appearance is very popular not only in Japan but also all over the world.

Bizen ware dates back to Heian Period (794-1185 AD). It was often used in the tea ceremony as its simplicity matches with "wabi-sabi" philosophy.

As I grew up in Hiroshima, which is next to Okayama prefecture, I am familiar with Bizen ware and have several Bizen ware such as cups, bowls and plates.
